Goldendoodle Coat Types
Let's talk coat type! There is much confusion in the goldendoodle world on coat types. The coats they have as puppies will not be the same as an adult! Let's take a look at the different types.

Curly Coat
A curly coated goldendoodle will be the most similar to a poodle. They will have the most curls and the tightest curls. Their coat will hold great structure. While we can still see some variation in the curls amongst different dogs, you can guarantee they'll have plenty of curls to go around! As puppies, curly coats do show their curl, but they will be very loose. Sometimes you will see this described as a "double curl" coat or, in more genetic speaking terms, "two copies of curl."
Wavy Coat
A wavy coated goldendoodle will still have plenty of curl, too! Their curls are typically looser. Surprisingly, this type of coat is where we see the most variances. Curls will be tighter on some dogs, and looser on others. Or, you might just see certain body parts holding the curl, such as head, ears, and back. This coat type still has fairly good structure. As puppies, wavy coats will have some wave or curl, but not much until that adult coat starts to grow in. You will sometimes see this described as a "single curl" coat or genetic/breeder talk, a +/- coat.

Straight Coat
A straight coat goldendoodle has the loosest curls of all. A lot think that these coat types will not have any curl, but that is not true. They will have silky waves and some will even have a good amount of curl, especially on their head and ears. As puppies, their coat looks very straight. But around 6 months old you'll start to see their hair start growing with a little more movement! This coat type has the least amount of structure since it lays the flattest. Some times you'll see it described as "negative for curl."
Things to note:
All 3 coat types require the same amount of maintenance. Their areas of concern might just be different. Curly coats might mat more easily on their tail while straight coats might mat more easily under their arms. Each dog's coat is different but their grooming needs are not! All three coat types need to be brushed regularly and need grooming every 6-8 weeks.

One coat type does not shed less than the other. There is not a genetic link between coat type and shedding. Shedding is determined with the furnishing locus and shed locus. Choosing a breeder that is well-versed in genetic testing is important.
